Color Symbolism: Rainbow Connections to Healing

Welcome to this compilation of the meanings of colors! It's intended to pair a curiosity of symbolism with a heart for rainbow hues and their magical effect on our inner work.

Consider where you interact with each color intentionally or unconsciously: decor in your home, crystals + gems you carry, foods ingested, candles lit, appearances in dreams or visualizations, the clothes you wear and beyond... or which ones you avoid!

I had a delightful time designing each collage image and drew inspiration from my friend, Nyasha Williams’ unreleased, color-coded collage oracle deck she’s currently working on. If you like my visuals, you’ll want to stay connected with her upcoming projects.

⊹⊹⊹

We'll begin with black which will lead us to the Shadow Portal, a place for which I have underground support to offer you.

BLACK SYMBOLISM: POWER + POTENTIAL

BEFRIENDING THE DARK

Defined by its absence of color and absorption of light, black invites us to reclaim power + brings initiations from the underworld.

Signifier of depth, black is represented in the mystery of soil, darkness of night, and wisdom of turning inward. Black indicates transformation, mourning and death.

Supportive qualities of black include independence, the strength to advocate for self and provision of emotional boundaries.

As a wizard of nuance, black holds numerous negative connotations yet it prompts prosperity and respect. Black contains the dichotomy of horror and beauty.

Black is protective. It reveals obstacles and also holds the remedy to remove them.

Connected to discipline, intensity, and deep ambitions, black points us to potential.

Red is a notoriously primal color reminding us at is basis of blood and fire. Both give life, stimulate vitality and provide bodily warmth. Interacting with these two mediums requires confidence and courage.

It evokes intense impulses of love, alertness, and power. As a sign of initiation and achievement, red promotes movement -- including elimination and destruction.

We can utilize the pungent visual performance of red to pursue our passions, promote protection against negativity, and symbolize sacrifice.

But, beware of incoming danger and defiance. Red has the ability to turn your attention toward what's safe for you or what isn't.

Getting cooler, let’s cover blue which merges us with the Throat Chakra, an expressive energy center for which I have transformational insight to offer you.

BLUE SYMBOLISM: CALM, COOL, UNLIMITED

TO ETERNITY AND BEYOND

Blue, the coolest color, spans the skies and seas. It’s association with water brings on a meditative and reflective mood while it’s ties to the sky suggest heavenly transcendence.

Blue is “true”. It communicates honesty and sincerity. It slows us down. Often associated with sadness, it’s a color that allows us to decompress and dive deeper within.

Although blue celebrates loyalty and godly devotion, the coldness can read as detachment. You can count on blue for a bit of luck and effectiveness against the evil eye.

Purple, a mix of red and blue, unites opposites then takes them to the top. It is ornate elevation: royal, rich and rare — which can be lonely…

As the final color of the rainbow, purple ushers the dying and signifies completion. It holds proximity to the sacred and fosters love. At times vividly playful, in others, sober and sophisticated.
